Do you have to stain right after sanding?
It all starts with sanding. You need a smooth surface with no blemishes because stain will highlight scratches and dings in the wood. Always sand down to clean wood (if you have enough meat left of the wood) before applying any stain. Stay close to that range and the wood should look great.
Can you sand and stain stairs?
Sand the conditioned wood lightly with fine-grit sandpaper. Just before applying the first coat of stain, lightly go over the stairs with 220-grit sandpaper to add a slight bit of roughness to the wood surface. Use tack cloths to remove the dust before proceeding. Sand in the direction of the grain, using even strokes.
Should you stain stair treads before installation?
Staining and varnishing hardwood treads prior to installation is recommended, especially in this case where we have stone or tile risers. Once the treads are stained and dried it’s time to cut and install them. It is important to have a stair tread measuring tool to measure and cut each tread.
Can I stain deck without sanding?
Sanding is more for the feel of the deck than to prepare it to accept a new stain. But sanding definitely won’t hurt anything. Ideally, applying a light wood stripper and then pressure washing in a board by board manner is highly recommended to clean the surface and open up the wood grain for staining.
Do you install risers or treads first?
Some contractors prefer installing the riser first, then installing the tread against the riser, fastening the riser to back edge of the tread with screws (Diagram A). Others prefer to place the tread first and place the riser on top of the tread, for additional support (Diagram B). dictated by jobsite conditions.

What’s the best way to put pre stain on wood?
Use a brush or cloth to apply a liberal coat of the pre-stain conditioner to all surfaces of your woodworking project. As with the stain you will soon apply, always work in the same direction as the wood grain when applying the wood conditioner.

How long should I wait before staining stair treads?
Wait for a minimum of two hours after the stain is applied. After that go up again and repeat the process two or three more times for a perfect finish to your newly sanded stair treads. After applying the last layer of stains let it dry for a long period of time.
