There is no longer even a need for a material, just enable “Shadow Catcher” in the Cycles Settings panel in the shadow catcher plane’s object settings. For more advanced tweaking of the new shadow catcher, you can add a material to the plane as detailed in this article:
What does a Shadow Catcher do in Blender?
But if you don’t, a shadow catcher is essentially a setup that allow us to render a shadow on a transparent background so that we may overlay it in another scene. This is useful if we want to have a 3D object added on top of a photo.

You’re blocking ads, which pay for BlenderNation. Read about other ways to support us. Unfortunately, EEVEE didn’t receive any new feature in the past weeks. BUT it doesn’t matter because we can create one. We will create it with what Blender 2.8 provides us. That new feature will be a SHADOW CATCHER !!
Can a Shadow Catcher be a blank plane?
Yep its that simple, the shadow catcher doesn’t have to be a blank plane, you can add a material to it just as you would any other object, and it will still be treated as a shadow catcher in the view-port and render. That is to say it will be invisible except for the shadow, only now, the surface will be reflected as whatever texture is applied!
How do you turn an object into a Shadow Catcher?
By selecting the object data tab and opening up the cycles settings panel you can simply tick a check box and turn any object into a shadow catcher. Neat, but as you can see there are no settings to make adjustments to the shadow, so results would be washed out…

Shadows will appear in the image, but the rest appears transparent as an alpha channel.
How do you make a Shadow Catcher in Eevee?
Add a plane which would become the “shadow catcher” and place any object on it. and point it on an object. Set size, and strength to have clearly visible shadows. Why do you need a shader in a video?
Essentially I want a shader that is shadeless—like an emitter—but catches shadows and light from other objects. This is so I can reconstruct objects in footage so other objects in the scene interact convincingly with them. Here’s an overcomplicated diagram to illustrate my point:

Under Scene, SHIFT select the first two layers, just like we did in the scene. Under Layer, we need to associate our Object Layer with the first tab, and the Shadow Catcher with the second tab. So select your Object Layer first, then hit the first box under Layer.

Cycles’ ShadowCatcher does not capture actual shadows and illumination of the scene (HDRI in this case) with their correct color. It just renders completely grayscale occlusion from the environment, that’s it.
Is there an option for ” Shadow only ” in bi?
In the BI there is an material option called “shadow only”. It renders only the shadows received by the object. I have just only one idea to obtain comparable effect of shadow below an airplane in Cycles:
Do you need a shader for rendering only shadows?
Rendering only shadows doesn’t need a shader. You only need to move your object to a layer. In Layers Panel >> Layers Section (it means ‘Rendered Layers’) you must not select that layer. All objects affect the render (shadows, reflections, …), but only selected layers in this sections are rendered.
