Does beech take stain well?
Unlike maple, beech won’t blotch when stained, and you can stain it to resemble other woods, particularly cherry. You’ll find that beech accepts all types of finishes equally well. If you have stock with a distinct ray fleck, enhance it with clear penetrating oil.
Does beech darken with age?

What’s the best way to finish wood with matte finish?
You’ll find that this method gives you a finish in fewer coats and less time than plain oil, yet maintains that almost bare, natural look to the wood. Lower the shellac sheen to matte by rubbing lightly with #0000 steel wool and paste wax. Wipe the wax off immediately, before it dries, to maintain a flat finish.
What’s the difference between brushable finish and matte finish?
The exact same gloss varnish, used for both sides of this cedar board, will make gloss when brushed and matte when wiped. Most brushable finishes are made to go on thick and flow out shiny. By contrast, wipe-on finishes stay thin and don’t develop a lot of gloss.
How many coats of matte finish do you need?
As with lacquer, you’ll notice it flows out somewhat better than its glossy cousins. It, too, tends to have higher solids content than lacquer, so two coats should be sufficient on raw wood, and you can get away with only one over painted surfaces.
