Does cherry wood blotch?
Though cherry has a beautiful color and is easy to work, it is difficult to finish nicely because of its tendency to blotch. Blotching is uneven coloring caused especially by stains, but also by just a clear finish, that leaves some areas darker than others.

Natural cherry wood oxidizes when given exposure to UV lights, causing it to gradually darken over time. In most cases, 80% of the oxidization happens in the first year. If the wood is in a particularly sunny spot, most of this oxidation will likely occur in the first three months.

Which is harder cherry or walnut?
Hardness is reported according to the Janka Hardness Scale, which measures the amount of pressure required to mar a wood sample. Black walnut ranks third in hardness – about 20% below red oak. Cherry is another 5% or so softer than walnut.
