Does DD-WRT support OpenVPN?
The DD-WRT firmware makes this very easy as it supports OpenVPN and PPTP style VPNs. The login address of the DD-WRT administrative interface is usually 192.168. 0.1, but you may have set up your network differently. Once you’re in, navigate to the Services tab, then to the VPN tab.
Why is my VPN not working when I connect to the internet?
The first step is to reset your DNS settings. Disconnect from the VPN and follow the steps in How to reset your DNS settings. Try connecting again and browsing. If the above does not resolve the issue then you can configure OpenDNS to resolve your DNS.
Why does my WIFI say no Internet when connected to VPN?
Faulty DNS settings can cause issues connecting to the internet after connecting to a VPN server. You may, therefore, need to change your DNS settings manually. Your VPN provider most likely has recommended DNS settings posted on their website.
How do I turn my DD-WRT router into an OpenVPN server?
[edit] OpenVPN in DD-WRT

- Fill in needed parameters (see below).
- Click Apply Settings.
How does OpenVPN on router work?
In the OpenVPN connection, the home network can act as a server, and the remote device can access the server through the router which acts as an OpenVPN Server gateway. To use the VPN feature, you should enable OpenVPN Server on your router, and install and run VPN client software on the remote device.
Can only connect to Internet with VPN?
More than likely you have a VPN kill switch enabled. You will need to disable this setting in your VPN settings under the program you use for your VPN in order for internet to work while not on VPN. Ensure this is set to auto detect instead of using a proxy. If it works, repeat for other browsers.
Do you need a VPN for a DD-WRT router?
If they are not available, try it with STD. and one device that connects you to the VPN, in this case that is your DD-WRT router. Either way, you will need a “first” device that connects you to the internet, and then you connect the DD-WRT router behind it.
Why does my computer keep bypassing my DD WRT router?
Here it is important that you set the “Default gateway” to the IP of the DD-WRT router. If it is still set to use your DSL-Modem or gateway-routers IP as gateway (or is set to obtain an IP automatically), the computer will most likely bypass the DD-WRT router and keep using your real IP and normal internet connection.
How to set policy rules on a DD-WRT router?
The workaround I used is to set policy rules will send all traffic from devices that get assigned dynamic IPs through the VPN, which means that all you need to do to ensure a device doesn’t get routed through the VPN tunnel is to assign it a static IP outside of the normal DHCP range.
Do you need to flash firmware on DD WRT router?
When your router is still using its original firmware (e.g. the one from Asus, D-LINK, etc.) you first need to flash DD-WRT firmware onto it using the firmware file for “initial flashing”. When that is done, do not begin to configure it for VPN yet.
