Does order of linking matter?
When linking object files (static libraries) into an executable, the order in which you give the libraries matters. For simple scenarios where there are no cyclic references, the dependent library should come on the left, and the library which provides said dependency should come on the right.
Where does the linker look for libraries?
By default, the runtime linker knows of only one standard place to look for libraries, /usr/lib when processing 32-bit objects, and /usr/lib/64 when processing 64-bit objects. All other directories to be searched must be added to the runtime linker’s search path explicitly.
How do I link libraries to another library?
6 Answers. Static libraries do not link with other static libraries. The only way to do this is to use your librarian/archiver tool (for example ar on Linux) to create a single new static library by concatenating the multiple libraries.
What does linker flag do?
1 Answer. This flag causes the linker to load every object file in the library that defines an Objective-C class or category.
What happens in linking?
Linking is process of collecting and maintaining piece of code and data into a single file. Linker also link a particular module into system library. Linking is performed at both compile time, when the source code is translated into machine code and load time, when the program is loaded into memory by the loader.
What is Rpath in Linux?
RPATH stands for run-time search path. According to Wikipedia, “rpath designates the run-time search path hard-coded in an executable file or library. It is resolved to where the executable is at run-time, and can be quite useful when setting RPATH.
How do I set a library path in Makefile?
Depending on the Makefile , it will often use a variable like CFLAGS , LIBS or LDFLAGS to pass extra options to the compiler. You can set these when you run make : LIBS=-lmylib LDFLAGS=-L/path/to/mylib make .
When would you use a static link?
Static linking includes the files that the program needs in a single executable file….
- As long as the end-user can relink to the LGPL’d code (e.g. because you provide your source code or compiled object files with your software), then static linking is fine.
- Don’t get it.
- @Thorn see the LGPL license section 4.
What linker does g ++ use?
g++ and gcc are drivers. Usually, they run the preprocessor ( cpp ), compiler proper ( cc1plus for C++ and cc1 for C) and the linker (gold or GNU ld) and all other things necessary.
Does gcc include a linker?
The gcc (or g++ ) command is simply a driver. It runs other programs, including the compiler proper ( cc1 for C code, cc1plus for C++ code) and the assembler and the linker. What programs are run are determined by the spec file (and there is an implicit one, see the -dumpspecs developer option).
What are the stages of compiling and linking?
The compilation process can be divided into four steps, i.e., Pre-processing, Compiling, Assembling, and Linking. The preprocessor takes the source code as an input, and it removes all the comments from the source code. The preprocessor takes the preprocessor directive and interprets it.
How to link a library to the command line?
In its most general form, LD_LIBRARY_PATHtakes two directory lists separated by a semicolon. The first list is searched before the list(s) supplied on the command-line, and the second list is searched after.
Why do libraries need to be linked at runtime?
This make an executable compiled with a .a library self-contained whereas a program compiled with a .so library must be able to access the .so at runtime. A .so library ALWAYS requires the -L and -l syntax because of the compilers need to know where the library is located and to link to it.
What happens when a library is included in a link?
Finally, if any of the objects in the library has been included in the link, the library is rescanned again – it’s possible that symbols imported by the included object can be found in other objects within the same library. When the linker finishes, it looks at the symbol table.
Can a library be left out of static linking?
Flags passed to the linker can tweak this process – again, we’ll see some examples later. Also note that when a library is examined, an object file within it can be left out of the link if it does not provide symbols that the symbol table needs. This is a very important feature of static linking.
