How are policy gradients used to find policy parameters?
Policy gradient ascent will help us to find the best policy parameters to maximize the sample of good actions. To measure how good our policy is, we use a function called the objective function (or Policy Score Function) that calculates the expected reward of policy. Three methods work equally well for optimizing policies.
How to use policy gradients in pure Python?
This blog post is intended as documenting my learning process of deriving and implementing Vanilla Policy Gradient (VPG aka REINFORCE) in pure Python and some of the hurdles and interesting tangents I came across during the process that are less often talked about.
What is the equation for a gradient update?
L L is the number of trajectories used for one gradient update. Equation (1) is the basic expression for a policy gradient update relating the observed rewards to the probabilities of the policy used to obtain them. However, if you look at it and think about the role of the rewards of the whole trajectory
Why are policy gradients better than value based methods?
There are three main advantages in using Policy Gradients. For one, policy-based methods have better convergence properties. The problem with value-based methods is that they can have a big oscillation while training. This is because the choice of action may change dramatically for an arbitrarily small change in the estimated action values.
How are policy gradient algorithms used in economics?
The policy gradient methods target at modeling and optimizing the policy directly. The policy is usually modeled with a parameterized function respect to θ, πθ(a | s). The value of the reward (objective) function depends on this policy and then various algorithms can be applied to optimize θ for the best reward.
How to reduce variance in a policy gradient?
A common way to reduce variance is subtract a baseline b (s) from the returns in the policy gradient. The baseline is essentially a proxy for the expected actual return, and it mustn’t introduce any bias to the policy gradient. In fact, the value function itself is a good candidate for baseline.
What is the relation between Q-learning and policy gradients methods?
Thus, policy gradient methods are on-policy methods. Q-Learning only makes sure to satisfy the Bellman-Equation. This equation has to hold true for all transitions. Therefore, Q-learning can also use experiences collected from previous policies and is off-policy.
