How big is transaction log during index reorganize?
The fragmentation level of the table is 30 – 35%. On some of these machines I get “transaction log full” error and reorganize fails. The transaction log size reaches upto 48gb. What is a good way to counter this?
How much log index rebuild will generate?
How much log index rebuild will generate.I remebered reading rebuild index should generate same amount of log file as table size. But my tests are showing otherwise. We need this estimate since we are trying to build azure database indexes and it has a limitation of max 2 GB. My database is in full recovery model.
What does index rebuild and reorganize do?
Index Rebuild and Reorganize SQL Server index rebuild operation is a fully logged operations that use the Transaction Log excessively, especially when the recovery model of the database is FULL. It runs by default in a single long-running transaction, that prevents the Transaction Log space reuse while rebuilding a large index.
Why does my SQL server log keep growing?
You need to troubleshoot the main cause behind running the log operation for a long time, such as the internal blocking process or a performance issue on the underlying disk I/O system to overcome that log growth.
What happens when you do a transaction log backup?
When you do a transaction log backup the log is truncated and and the space can be reused. Based on your comments, it sounds like the log is getting full doing an “alter index .. reorganize”. That can happen 🙂
Can a transaction log be truncated in tempdb?
The tempdb transaction log cannot be truncated until the index operation is completed. Use a database recovery model that allows for minimal logging of the index operation. This may reduce the size of the log and prevent the log from filling the log space.
Can a table increase the size of a transaction log?
I can increase the log size to a larger value but as the table size increases in the future, the value may not be enough. Also it defeats the purpose of doing reorganize to reclaim space if I am going to increase the log size equally. Any ideas on how I can effectively counter this?
