An easy check for SharePoint Online or on premises would be to look at the host name. In the case of SharePoint Online, it will always be in the form of tenant.sharepoint.com .
How do I know if SharePoint is on premise?
Use the Help (“?”) menu in SharePoint to identify your version:
- Open SharePoint in your browser.
- Near the upper-right corner of that window, select ?
- If a menu opens, select Help. A Help pane opens.
- Look at the title of the article. If you’re using SharePoint Server, the version number is stated:

That is usually the big decision that IT managers need to make first when considering a shift to the new version of SharePoint. Up until 2011, there was no choice – to reap the benefits of SharePoint – organizations had to host it somewhere.
Do you need a Cal for a SharePoint Server?
For On-Premises, intranet sites are licensed using a Server/CAL (Client Access License) model. SharePoint Server 2019 is required for each running instance of the software, and CALs are required for each person or device accessing a SharePoint Server. However, SharePoint can still be acquired as an on-premises solution as well. So, back to the original question, should you migrate to SharePoint Online or stay on Premises? I really stay behind this statement.
