How do aircraft missiles lock?
Many modern anti-aircraft missiles use some form of semi-active radar homing, where the missile seeker listens for reflections of the launch platform’s main radar. To provide a continuous signal, the radar is locked-onto the target, following it throughout the missile’s flight.
How do missile lock warnings work?
Most “missile lock indicators” simply listen to how frequently a radar scan takes place, and when it starts happening very quickly it indicates that the faster, more focused radar has found them and is considered locked on, or that a missile with a fast, focused radar has found them and is locked on.
Can missiles lock onto people?
Completely normal, all the other vehicles with lock-on missiles will lock onto enemy NPCs on foot. There’s a few exceptions to this, eg. the weapons dealers in the disruption preps for the Cayo Perico Heist.
What is lock-on before launch and lock-on after launch?
Lock-on after launch, or LOAL, is a capability of missile systems to lock-on to its target after being launched from its carrier vehicle. The term is normally used in reference to airborne weapons, especially air-to-air missiles.
How are missiles detected?
To detect approaching missiles, the rocket motor of the missile must be burning – it requires the high effective burning temperatures associated with solid fuel rocket motors. IR-based systems are probably better at altitude but UV is better against surface-to-air missiles.
Can missile change direction?
The flight fins themselves, which steer the missiles through the air — just like the flaps on an airplane wing, the moving flight fins generate drag (increase wind resistance) on one side of the missile, causing it to turn in that direction.
