Grant site access to a group
- On your website or team site, click Settings.
- On the Site Settings page, under Users and Permissions, click Site Permissions.
- On the Permissions tab, click Grant Permissions.
- In the Share dialog, type the name of the SharePoint group that you want to give access to.
Nesting one SharePoint group inside a different group is impossible. At the same time, you can still nest existing AD DS (Active Directory Domain Service) groups inside of a SharePoint group.

Who is responsible for AD security groups in SharePoint?
Late answer but, The User Profile is not responsible in this case. SharePoint recognizes AD security groups and attaching permissions to these groups will cause the permissions to be granted to the User.
Can a user be added to an ad group?
In the SharePoint group I add the corresponding domain group. Now if I add a user to the domain group, shouldn’t that user have access to wherever the SharePoint group have access or does the UPS have to be set up for this? I don’t won’t to write back to AD or anything, just grant users access. Thanks in advance.
Currently my SharePoint is installed in ABC domain and I am able to add users and manage permissions for ABC domain. But, now I need to provide access to another domain say XYZ but unable to add users in XYZ domain.
