How do I change my PGP passphrase?
Use the following steps to reset the passphrase of your PGP Key.
- In PGP Desktop, click the PGP Keys Control box.
- Select Keys>I Forgot My Passphrase.
- Answer three of the five security questions correctly and click Next.
- Click Next. to continue with creating a new passphrase.
- Enter and re-enter your passphrase.
What is passphrase in PGP?
A passphrase is a longer version of a password, and in theory, a more secure one. PGP uses a passphrase to encrypt your private key on your machine. Your private key is encrypted on your disk using a hash of your passphrase as the secret key.

First, PGP generates a random session key using one of two (main) algorithms. This key is a huge number that cannot be guessed, and is only used once. Next, this session key is encrypted. The sender sends their encrypted PGP session key to the recipient, and they are able to decrypt it using their private key.
