How do I change the level of a Table of Contents?
Format the text in your table of contents
- Go to References > Table of Contents > Custom Table of Contents.
- Select Modify.
- In the Styles list, click the level that you want to change and then click Modify.
- In the Modify Style pane, make your changes.
- Select OK to save changes.
How to change the number of levels in a table of contents?
To change the number of levels displayed in your Table of Contents, click Show levels, and then click the number of levels you want. Click OK. Want more? How are TOC levels mapped in word table of contents?
By default, Word maps the 4 levels we selected to the first 4 headings. So in other words, when Word builds our table of contents it includes any text that’s formatted with heading styles one through four, and it assigns them to TOC levels one through four. We could change this, for example, so that the Heading 5 Style is mapped to TOC level 4.
