How do I download global land cover data?
Where can I get global land cover data?
- Select “GLCC” under “Land Cover” in the “Data Sets” tab in EarthExplorer.
- Derived from 1-km Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data collected April 1992-March 1993.
What is global land cover?
GLCC (global) data consists of the continent GLCC datasets which have been combined to produce a set of global GLCC composites. The global data is available in either the Interrupted Goode Homolosine or in geographic (latitude/longitude) coordinates. Nominal spatial resolution is 1 kilometer.
What is land cover maps?
Land cover maps represent spatial information on different types (classes) of physical coverage of the Earth’s surface, e.g. forests, grasslands, croplands, lakes, wetlands. Dynamic land cover maps include transitions of land cover classes over time and hence captures land cover changes.
What is difference between land use and land cover?
Land cover indicates the physical land type such as forest or open water whereas land use documents how people are using the land. Water types include wetlands or open water. Land use shows how people use the landscape – whether for development, conservation, or mixed uses.
Where can I find global land cover data?
Global Land Cover Datasets. This page offers access to a number of datasets which describe land cover characteristics at 1°×1° resolution and to some sample data product images. The datasets were assembled by Inez Fung, Elaine Matthews, and associates during 1984-1991. The land cover datasets use a common format throughout,…
How big is the earthenv land cover dataset?
The datasets can be downloaded in the GeoTiff format for individual land-cover classes (20~100MB each). Although DISCover is based on older remote sensing imagery (1992-1993), it contains some complementary information which is useful for capturing sub-pixel land cover heterogeneity (please see the associated article for details).
Where can I find global 1 km consensus land cover?

When was global land cover characterization ( GLCC ) created?
Global Land Cover Characterization (GLCC) is a series of global land cover classification datasets that are based primarily on the unsupervised classification of 1-km AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) 10-day NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) composites. The AVHRR source imagery dates from April 1992 through March 1993.
