How do I enable compute geometry in ArcGIS?
Right click on the new field and select the “calculate geometry” option on the menu. Click “Yes” to move past the editing session warning that pops up. If you are working in a geographic coordinate system, you will not be able to calculate geometry. The calculate area and perimeter options will be disabled.

If the calculate geometry and field calculator are grayed and the feature classes are in GDB – start Editing in Editor tools, if this doesn´t help try to delete geodatabase lock in Windows explorer and restart ArcGIS a PC for sure. Why are the units greyed out when I go back to the file?
It will still be greyed out when you go back, but the units will be whatever you set in the Projected Coordinate System Properties window. Ensure that the folder AND any individual files within aren’t “read only” I had this problem from copying a file over and forgot to change the read/write access.
