How do I export Illustrator icons?

- Step 1: Create a template file. You’ll want two artboards; one at 16×16 and the other at 24×24.
- Step 2: Create your icon! I am working on another blog post on how I create my icons.
- Step 3: Export the artboards. Go to File > Export > For Screens or use the keyboard shortcut ⌥+⌘+E.
Why is my Illustrator File pixelated when exported?
There are 2 reasons why your exported image appears pixelated. Either you’re original artboard size in illustrator does not match your intended export dimensions (artboard was too small) or your export settings result in a lower quality export. Pixelated images lose quality when scaled up, unlike vector images.
What size should an icon be in Illustrator?
You probably already know that icons should be placed into square artboards. You could choose from the various icon sizes: 16×16; 24×24; 32×32; 48×48; 64×64; 96×96; 128×128; 256×256; and many others. Also, make sure all these values are set in pixels!
