- Save/Export the file as PNG for transparency.

Do a wand select of the background. Shift click in any isolated areas that you want to remove (loops in “O”, “P”…) Select>Grow by one pixel so that the selection bleeds over the pixels at the edge of things. Color>Color to alpha and remove the white.

You don’t smooth a jagged edge, you avoid creating it in the first place. Since you say “I made the background transparenr” I’m ready to bet that you just did a wand-selected+ [delete]? That would explain why you get a jagged edge.
