From the top right of the page, click the gear icon. Select Edit Page and the Lightning App Builder will appear. Click on the Highlights Panel Lightning component. On the right panel, select Hide Follow/Unfollow button (desktop only) checkbox to hide the button or deselect it to show the button.
The Follow button lets users see activity such as field changes, posts, tasks, and comments on records directly in their Chatter feed. To display it on record pages or list views (available in Classic), enable Feed Tracking for the desired object.

At present, There is no feature provided by Salesforce to hide/unhide the follow button in communities if chatter feed is enabled (as mentioned in earlier answers). However you can make use of global CSS override in the community.

We have a use case in our community implementation where commuinty users shouldn’t be seeing follow button on record detail page in communities. Right now the only way to acheive this is to disable chatter feed tracking on those respective objects within Salesforce.
How to remove ” + follow ” button from the ” record “?
The only way to remove the button is to turn off Feed Tracking for that object under Setup > Feed Tracking. That was a good suggestion but doesn’t work unfortunately. It seems to be leaving a grey line trail. Any suggestions on how to hide that little leftover?
The workaround does not work anymore either as it leaves a grey area instead. The css overrides are very unstable as it changes for each release. It’s necessary option!
