How do I set a global IPv6 address?
To configure IPv6 on a Cisco routers, you need to do two things:
- enable IPv6 routing on a Cisco router using the ipv6 unicast-routing global configuration command.
- configure the IPv6 global unicast address on an interface using the ipv6 address address/prefix-length [eui-64] command.
What is the difference between a link local IPv6 address and a global IPv6 address?
Global unicast address—A unique IPv6 address assigned to a host interface. Link-local IPv6 address—An IPv6 address that allows communication between neighboring hosts that reside on the same link. Link-local addresses have a local scope, and cannot be used outside the link. They always have the prefix FE80::/10.
What are IPv6 link local and site local addresses?
IPv6 link-local and site-local addresses are called scoped addresses. The Windows Sockets (Winsock) API supports the sin6_scope_id member in the sockaddr_in6 structure for use with scoped addresses. For IPv6 link-local addresses (fe80::/10 prefix), the sin6_scope_id member in the sockaddr_in6 structure is the interface number.
How are aggregatable global IPv6 addresses used?
Aggregatable global addresses are used on links that are aggregated upward through organizations, and eventually to the Internet service providers (ISPs). Aggregatable global IPv6 addresses are defined by a global routing prefix, a subnet ID, and an interface ID.
How are global unicast addresses allocated in IPv6?
Except for addresses that start with binary 000, all global unicast addresses have a 64-bit interface ID. The IPv6 global unicast address allocation uses the range of addresses that start with binary value 001 (2000::/3). The figure below shows the structure of an aggregatable global address. Figure 1. What are the different types of IPv6 addresses?
IPv6 Address Type: Unicast. An IPv6 unicast address is an identifier for a single interface, on a single node. A packet that is sent to a unicast address is delivered to the interface identified by that address. Cisco software supports the IPv6 unicast address types described in the following sections.
