The second external monitor most likely uses the discrete graphics GPU so this is probably an NVIDIA issue the same as others in the thread. Edit: current workaround is to wake monitor from sleep via its power button before I wake computer. If I wake the computer before the monitor goes back to sleep it seems fine.

The monitor DP (DisplayPort) is passive. It simply waits for the signal from the video card to awake. By powering the monitor off/on, you are forcing the operating system and/or video card to reinitiate the DP handshake.
