How do you adjust the roller rocker arms on a Ford 302?
Rotate the engine until the exhaust starts up. Back off the intake rocker and let the lifter relax a minute or two. Turn the pushrod back and forth with your fingers (thumb and index) lightly on the rod while you start to tighten the adjuster nut. When you feel the pushrod stop (slack is gone) STOP.
Does valve adjustment affect idle?
Unless they’re adjusted so wrong and are to tight, the valve adjustment won’t affect the idling. That will keep them from closing all the way. Either you have a vacuum leak from an unhooked hose or your valves were not adjusted correctly.

Use a ring spanner to loosen the locknut and turn the screw clockwise to decrease the gap, and the opposite way to increase it. When the clearance is correct, hold the screw with a screwdriver while you tighten the locknut, then re-check the clearance. There may be a self-locking adjusting screw with no locknut.
