How can I see what users are accessing a file?
To see who reads the file, open “Windows Event Viewer”, and navigate to “Windows Logs” → “Security”. There is a “Filter Current Log” option in the right pane to find the relevant events. If anyone opens the file, event ID 4656 and 4663 will be logged.
If you want to monitor who’s currently accessing the shared folder, you can simply go to Computer Management Console ->Shared Folders ->Open Files. It will display the username, the file the user is currently accessing with what kind of access, read or write.
How do I view a samba connection?
Open the Computer Management console on your file server (or connect to the server remotely from the management console running on your computer) and go to System Tools -> Shared Folders -> Open files. A list of open files on current SMB server is displayed on the right side of the window.
Right click on the Computer icon on the desktop. From the drop down list, choose Map Network Drive. Pick a drive letter that you want to use to access the shared folder and then type in the UNC path to the folder. UNC path is just a special format for pointing to a folder on another computer.
How do I enable auditing on a shared folder?
Navigate to Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings ->Local Policies -> Audit Policy. Under Audit Policy, select ‘Audit object access’ and turn auditing on for both success and failure.
The Kinda-Sorta Way: Select System Tools >> Shared Folders >> Open Files to see what files are open on the file server. From there you can correlate the user accounts that have open files to the shares that they are connected to. However, that can be insufficient.
How to configure shared connections for all users?
Configure shared connections for all users of the Windows Admin Center gateway. With the ability to configure shared connections, gateway administrators can configure the connections list once for all users of a given Windows Admin Center gateway. This feature is only available on Windows Admin Center service mode.
Any connections and tags added in the Shared Connections list will appear for all users of this Windows Admin Center gateway, from their all connections page.
How to view who is connected to your shared folders on Windows?
Once Computer Management opens, expand System Tools Shared Folders (click on the small arrows as shown circled in the image below) then click Shares. Here you will see all the shares on your Computer and the number of connected users listed in the Client Connections column.
