How do you clean an engine block gasket surface?
GM recommends the use of a razor blade or plastic gasket scraper to clean the gasket surface on engine components that are to be reused. When using a razor blade-type gasket scraper, use a new razor blade for each cylinder head and corresponding block surface.
How do I prepare a block for MLS gasket?
To prepare the block surface correctly:
- Use a “spray-on” gasket remover to soften the old gasket.
- Then with a new razor blade held almost parallel to the surface you can scrape off the material, making sure not to scratch the surface.
Should you spray copper on MLS head gasket?
“It’s not a money thing with some of these race teams,” says Rotunno. “If you pull the head and there’s still good rubber on both sides, it most likely will seal.” Sealant should never be used on MLS gaskets. Reusing copper gaskets isn’t as critical an issue, and that’s not the least of its benefits.
Is it OK to sand a gasket block?
You shouldn’t sand the block at all unless there is existing damage of some kind – but it really doesn’t take much to damage, even a fine scratch can ruin the seal for the gasket. If you have to sand it, you will have to finish it to quite a fine grade and be very careful about keeping the surface relatively even/level.
Can a Rol-Loc be used to clean a gasket surface?
A rol-loc can an will “wave” a gasket surface when used improperly. In most cases it is. So do not use this!! You must be logged in to view this image or video. What I prefer to use is a hard back body board with 80-100 grit sand paper.
Can a gasket be too smooth or too rough?
If the surface is too smooth, the gasket will have less “grip” and may leak; if the surface is too rough, the gasket will have a difficult time conforming to surface imperfections and may also leak. Surface finish can be checked using a surface finish comparator or a profilometer.
What kind of gasket to use for cylinder head mating surface?
Fel-Pro ® uses a variety of the latest sealing technologies available to design head gaskets that conform and compensate for minor surface imperfections while being dense enough to maintain even loading between the cylinder head and block. However, even the best head gasket can’t seal a surface that is improperly prepared.
