How do you describe knurling?
Knurling is a manufacturing process, typically conducted on a lathe, whereby a pattern of straight, angled or crossed lines is rolled into the material.
How do you measure a knurl?
Divide the number of cutting teeth on the wheel by the blank circumference of the wheel in inches to find the number of teeth per inch (TPI). For example, if a wheel with a blank circumference of 6.28 inches has 157 teeth, it has 25 TPI. Divide 1.000 by the TPI of the knurl to calculate the knurl’s circular pitch.

What is Knurl pitch?
For knurls listed as a Metric Pitch, the pitch on straight knurls is the approximate tooth to tooth distance at the outside diameter of the work part measured in millimeters. For diagonal and diamond wheels, the Metric Pitch is measured perpendicular to the teeth or helix angle.

How deep should a knurl be?
How “deep” to knurl? A fine knurl is 0.010-0.015 inch, a medium knurl 0.015-0.025, and a coarse knurl 0.025-0.035. Whatever depth you are knurling to, the procedure is to go all in. In other words, you move the cross slide or adjust the squeeze (scissor-type knurler) to the full depth, right from the initial contact.

Where do you call out the knurl on a drawing?
As a matter of style, I would recommend calling out the knurl on the face view, not the end view so it is more clear what it references. Additionally it may be hard for a machinist to knurl right up to that shoulder on the right of the knurled area. If you could hold the knurling back even 1mm that would probably help.
What do you need to know about the knurl?

When do you use knurling in a shaft?
Knurling is widely used in industry for many applications. Some of these include decorative and “grip” surfaces, repair of undersized shafts and oversize bores, and driving serrations and splines. The word “knurling” applies to both the method of production, and the rolled section on the part.
Which is the European standard for knurl on drawing?
The (European) standard for knurls is DIN 82. The standard includes a proposed drawing representation as well. Its intention is to describe hand gripping aid knurls. As Ethan48 says, for fitting you need a more precise definition, at least for the outer surface (diameter, cylindricity, runout, etc.)
