How to Find Expiration Date by Lot Number
- The first two digits (19) refer to the year of manufacture (2019)
- The next two digits (03) identify the month the product was manufactured (March) or the date of manufacture.
- The following two numerals (22) refer to the day of the year.
How expiration dates are written?
Read these codes as MMDDYY, where “MM” refers to the month, “DD” refers to the date, and “YY” refers to the year. This is one of the more common codes that you’ll see on food items. For example, “121518” would be read as December 15, 2018.
Is the expiration date required on a food label?
Manufacturers generally apply date labels at their own discretion and for a variety of reasons. The most common is to inform consumers and retailers of the date up to which they can expect the food to retain its desired quality and flavor. Date labels are generally not required on packaged foods.
Are sell by and use by dates the same?
A “Sell-By” date tells the store how long to display the product for sale for inventory management. It is not a safety date. A “Use-By” date is the last date recommended for the use of the product while at peak quality.

What is a date code?
A date code is the year of manufacture followed by the week. It is an 8 digit code. Comprised of a 4 digit number followed by a 2 digit number, then another 2 digit number (which is sometimes alpha-numeric). This is an example of a valid date code – 2017-22-59.
How do you read a 7 digit date code?
Find the year from the first 4 digits if the number has 7 digits. Some JD will show the full year in 4 digits for added clarity. For example, if it’s a 7 digit number and the first 4 digits are 1997, then that corresponds to 1997.
