How do you get a domain name after it expires?
If your domain expired and you’ve passed the grace period for your domain ending (typically 30 days) but fewer than 60 days ago, you can restore your expired domain. When you restore an expired domain, you must pay a one-time restoration fee and purchase at least one additional year of registration.

When a domain expires it becomes inactive immediately and all the services attached to it cease to function. You can’t make any updates to the domain while it is expired. The domain will remain available for reactivation at your regular domain rate under your list of Expired Domains.

These services are meant to keep your data out of the WHOIS record to prevent spam and general harassment, not as a legal shield for your identity or to allow you to do legally questionable things behind a domain.

WHOIS is a database that stores public information on a domain’s registered users in a way that can be easily read. It basically tells you “who is” responsible for a domain. Many online registrars will allow you to access and search the WHOIS databases.
How can I recover my domain name if I lost it?
If you need to recover a domain account where you lost the password, the WHOIS info will often give the registrant email address which will help you in recovering a password and login from the domain registrar.
