How do you identify ECM?
To identify an ECM part, read the marking and decode it.
- Locate the serial number on the car part. It should be either imprinted directly onto the metal of the part itself or on a sticker on the side of the part.

How do I read my ECU part number?
Which ECU Part Number should I choose?
- Connect your harness and Interface to the ECU.
- Connect the Interface to your computer via USB cable.
- Put the Interface into Read/Write mode (Red LED on)
- Go to “Tools”=>”Read Serial Number”, this will read the ECU Part Number and Serial Number from the ECU.
Can I test my ECM?
The first thing to do is test the ECM to see if it returns any error codes indicating a failure of a specific engine system. For example, if you are experiencing misfiring, then a diagnostics test of the ECM should return an error code showing a problem with one of the cylinders.
What kind of ECU does my car have?
To identify your ECU you will need to know its generation, part number and possibly its ROM number. The ECU can be located in several places: under a metal plate in the passenger’s footwell (88-91 Civics) in the passenger’s footwell behind the carpet (92-95 Civics)
How do I find my PCM part number?
If the sticker has faded or fallen off, you will need to go under the dash on the passenger side and remove the kick panel to locate the PCM. The code should be on a sticker on the PCM harness. It is a 4 character code usually 3 letters and 1 number.
How do I know my ECM is bad?
A bad ECM may lead to a vehicle that won’t or is difficult to start. If the ECM fails completely, it will leave the vehicle without engine management control, and will not start or run as a result. The engine may still crank, but it will not be able to start without the vital inputs from the computer.

What’s the difference between serial numbers and part numbers?
