How do you calculate valve shims?
The equation you’ll use to determine the new shim size is as follows: New shim size = (measured valve clearance – specified valve clearance) + old shim size.
Do you screw through shims?
If you drive the screws through the shims, you’ll discover it’s impossible to move them to make tiny adjustments as you install the door. By placing the screws immediately below the shims, the shims can’t fall to the ground as you work with the door. Try to keep shims dry at all times.

What are valve shims for?
For a straight and concise answer: Valve shimming on dirt bikes, and any other motorcycle for that matter, is the practice of adjusting the valve clearance inside your engine. By using a shim, you create space between the bottom of the cam and top of your engine’s valve bucket.
How do alignment shims work?
Setting Camber With Shims If the pivot shaft is inboard of the frame, adding shims causes the top of the tire to lean inward, increasing negative camber. Removing the shims causes positive camber, or an outward lean.
What are valve shims?
Shim-over-bucket “adjusters” In this design, an inverted “bucket” sits over the valve stem, and a shim sits atop the bucket to create the necessary lash. One can’t really “adjust” the valve lash on this setup. To change the clearance, the shim is replaced with one of a different thickness.
