How are third party APIs different from other APIs?
Third party APIs have a slightly different permissions system — they tend to use developer keys to allow developers access to the API functionality, which is more to protect the API vendor than the user. You’ll find a line similar to the following in the Mapquest API example:
What should the user do with an API key?
Assume that a user just needs to read an email, and generates an API key. But that key now has full access to other services, including deleting records in the database. The right approach is to allow the end users to properly restrict API Key access and choose specific actions that an API key can carry out.
What’s the best way to restrict API access?
The right approach is to allow the end users to properly restrict API Key access and choose specific actions that an API key can carry out. This can be done by providing scopes, where each scope represents a specific permission.
Can a developer revoke a third-party API key?
When the developer has registered for a key, they are then known to the API provider, and action can be taken if they start to do anything malicious with the API (such as tracking people’s location or trying to spam the API with loads of requests to stop it working, for example). The easiest action would be to just revoke their API privileges.
