How do you solder BGA with hot air?

- Apply Flux Paste (Not Liquid Flux) on to the pad.
- Place solder balls very carefully on the pad.
- Apply paste flux to the bottom (soldering side) of the BGA package.
- Carefully place the BGA Package on the solder balls.
- Preheat and then apply Hot Air with Hot Air Blower from both top and bottom.

What should the temperature be to remove a BGA chip?
I’d personally start with a hot air nozzle about the same size as the chip, set the air temperature to about 350 deg C, then start by warming the board from a distance and gradually getting closer to the IC. If after a couple of minutes it hasn’t let go, wind the temperature up to 400 degrees. Then again, I rework PCBs with a paint stripper.

Finally, position the little tin ball in the center of the BGA chip. Make sure the board is horizontal. This will prevet the tin solder ball to roll away when the tin is melted. and start heating the board up, both from above and from the bottom side. Then stay on the top until the tin blob start to melt.

When BGA balls melt down they “collapse” and the BGA sinks down a little bit, with the time you will get experience and will notice this collapse to be sure when the BGA balls are really soldered. You can check your soldering results with magnifying glass looking at the BGA sides.
