How do you tell if a solenoid is energized?
The only indication of the solenoids’ typical status (energized or de-energized) comes from the letters “NE” next to each solenoid coil. In this case, “NE” stands for normally energized.
Can a solenoid get weak?
An overheated coil’s resistance increases, current flow and force are reduced, and the solenoid will not close, resulting in coil burnout again. The solenoid becomes too weak to close, so it receives a continuous high inrush current and burns out. In rare cases, a solenoid coil will burn out due to over voltage.
Do solenoids need resistors?
The resistors, capacitor, and diode are unnecessary. The solenoid coil is rated for 24V, so it will operate at approximately that voltage with no additional resistors needed to drop voltage and/or limit current. The diode would typically be used to protect an active switching device from inductive kickback.
What happens when the solenoid is energized?
Solenoid valves are control units which, when electrically energized or de-energized, either shut off or allow fluid flow. The actuator takes the form of an electromagnet. When energized, a magnetic field builds up which pulls a plunger or pivoted armature against the action of a spring.

While it is true that the magnetic force directly relates to the current through the solenoid, the actual mechanical force and movement are not so closely correlated, since they depend on the construction of the solenoid and the nature of the load. So, characterization is required to correlate the average current to the solenoid opening.
How is the recirculation current of a solenoid used?
The solenoid recirculation current can be an aid to detecting solenoid health; if some of the windings have begun to short, the condition can be seen by measuring the passively controlled recirculation current. Because the switch is on the high side, it is more expensive to buy and to drive.
