How do you time a holding pattern?
The outbound leg is flown for the appropriate time interval to achieve the regulated inbound timing. Inbound timing for a standard hold is one minute when at or below 14,000′ and one and a half minutes when above 14,000′.
What happens when a plane is in a holding pattern?
A holding pattern for instrument flight rules (IFR) aircraft is usually a racetrack pattern based on a holding fix. Aircraft will fly towards the fix, and once there will enter a predefined racetrack pattern.
What is the maximum holding speed above 14000 MSL?
210 KIAS
Holding patterns from 6,001′ to 14,000′ may be restricted to a maximum airspeed of 210 KIAS.
How do you know what your holding pattern is?
Holding Pattern Timing:
- At or below 14,000′ MSL, legs are timed to equal 1 minute.
- Above 14,000′ MSL, legs are timed to equal 1 and 1/2 minutes.
- Timing inbound is measured from the point that the aircraft is wings level, inbound to the holding fix, to the time the aircraft crosses the holding fix.
What color are mandatory hold signs?
red
Mandatory signs have a red background with a white inscription. They are used to denote an entrance to a runway or critical area and areas where an aircraft is prohibited from entering. the holding position marking on the taxiway.
How is the distance of a hold determined?
Most holds depicted on GPS instrument approaches in the US now have a specified distance for the outbound hold leg, instead of a timed leg. The traditional hold leg distance is determined by timing. See AIM 5-3-7 § j. 4.: 4. Timing. (a) Inbound Leg. (1) At or below 14,000 feet MSL: 1 minute. (2) Above 14,000 feet MSL: 11/2 minutes.
What do you need to know about hold entry?
To understand the hold-entry procedures, you must first understand that the aircraft can approach the fix (direct track) from any direction, so the challenge rests with trying to figure out the initial turns that must be accomplished to end up tracking inbound on the assigned holding track (the inbound track).
When do ATC omit the holding direction statement?
When the pattern is charted on the assigned procedure or route being flown, ATC may omit all holding instructions except the charted holding direction and the statement AS PUBLISHED; for example, HOLD EAST AS PUBLISHED. ATC must always issue complete holding instructions when pilots request them.
Is the pilot expected to fly the hold?
Yes, the pilot is expected to fly the hold as depicted, with an outbound leg based on distance (see AIM 5-3-7, paragraph b). Most holds depicted on GPS instrument approaches in the US now have a specified distance for the outbound hold leg, instead of a timed leg.
