How do you use scale bars?
A scale bar can be used like a small ruler to determine distances on maps. These are easy to add to your map – simply click Insert on the top bar menu, then select Scale Bar. There are a number of predefined scale bars to choose from – after you select one, you can change many of its properties.
What are scale bars used for?
Scale bars provide a visual indication of distance and feature size on the map. A scale bar is a line or bar divided into parts. It is labeled with its ground length, usually in multiples of map units, such as tens of kilometers or hundreds of miles. Scale bars are associated with a map frame in a layout.
How does the scale bar work in QGIS?
You can set how long a segment will be ( Fixed width ), or limit the scale bar size in mm with Fit segment width option. In the latter case, each time the map scale changes, the scale bar is resized (and its label updated) to fit the range set. Height is used to define the height of the bar.
How does the label unit multiplier work in QGIS?
Units conversion is handled automatically. The Label unit multiplier specifies how many scale bar units per labeled unit. Eg, if your scale bar units are set to “meters”, a multiplier of 1000 will result in the scale bar labels in “kilometers”.
