How does a blob store work in a RBS?
Each BLOB store can specify its own provider library which plugs into the RBS client library and specifies how BLOBs are stored and accessed. A number of third-party storage solution vendors have developed RBS providers that conform to these standard APIs and support BLOB storage on various storage platforms.
Is there a remote blob store in SQL Server?
SQL Server Remote BLOB Store (RBS) is an optional add-on component that lets database administrators store binary large objects in commodity storage solutions instead of directly on the main database server. RBS is included on the SQL Server 2017 installation media, but is not installed by the SQL Server Setup program.
Where are the blobs stored in SharePoint Server?
By default, these BLOBs, also named unstructured data, are stored inline in the SharePoint content database together with the metadata, or structured data. Because BLOBs can be very large, it can be helpful to move BLOB data out of the SQL Server database, and onto commodity or content addressable storage.
How to install and configure RBS with a 3rd party provider?
If you want to install and configure RBS using the FILESTREAM provider, use the procedure in Install and configure RBS with FILESTREAM in a SharePoint Server farm. Do not directly access BLOBs when you are using third-party providers. Always access these BLOBs by using SharePoint Server.
When to use RBS in a database server?
By using lower-priced storage instead of more expensive storage on a databases server, you can save on costs. RBS saves storage resources when there are fewer large BLOBs. When there are many smaller files, there is no benefit.
Backup and restore features work normally without additional work when FILESTREAM provider is used. Here are the steps to enable Remote Blob in SharePoint 2013 content databases: Log on to SQL Server, from Start menu, open SQL Server Configuration Manager. Select SQL Server Services, in the left pane. Select all the check boxes and apply.
