How does a character level RNN work in NLP?
A character-level RNN reads words as a series of characters – outputting a prediction and “hidden state” at each step, feeding its previous hidden state into each next step. We take the final prediction to be the output, i.e. which class the word belongs to.
How do you generate text with a RNN?
Generate text. The simplest way to generate text with this model is to run it in a loop, and keep track of the model’s internal state as you execute it. Each time you call the model you pass in some text and an internal state. The model returns a prediction for the next character and its new state.
Can a RNN be implemented as a feed forward layer?
This means you can implement a RNN in a very “pure” way, as regular feed-forward layers. This RNN module (mostly copied from the PyTorch for Torch users tutorial) is just 2 linear layers which operate on an input and hidden state, with a LogSoftmax layer after the output.
How to train a loss function in nn.nllloss?
We will also want a quick way to get a training example (a name and its language): Now all it takes to train this network is show it a bunch of examples, have it make guesses, and tell it if it’s wrong. For the loss function nn.NLLLoss is appropriate, since the last layer of the RNN is nn.LogSoftmax. Each loop of training will:
Which is better for speech recognition RNN or MLP?
RNN seems to be more natural for speech recognition than MLP because it allows variability in input length. The motivation for applying recurrent neural network to this domain is to take advantage of their ability to process short-term spectral features but yet respond to long-term temporal events.
How are BRNN and LSTM used in speech recognition?
The input (striped) feeds to both of these, and both of them feed to the output of the RNN (black). The architecture ultimately proposed by Graves et. al. in their paper utilizes both BRNNs and LSTM units. However, in addition, they extend the architecture by adding more hidden layers at each timestep.
How is speech data transformed in TensorFlow RNN?
This typical human-centric transformation for speech data is to compute Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC), either 13 or 26 different cepstral features, as input for the model. After this transformation the data is stored as a matrix of frequency coefficients (rows) over time (columns).
How to build a character to character RNN?
I looked over a few tutorials on Recurrent Neural Networks, using LSTM; however I couldn’t find the one that uses the LSTMCell class, many used the higher level LSTM class. So I decided to build one character-to-character model, using the lstm cell.
How to predict a character in PyTorch RNN?
As you might have noticed, I also predict some characters, setting the initial character to be “A.” The prediction is quite straightforward: the model receives a one-hot encoded “A” as an input to the LSTM cell at time t=0. After that, we obtain an output with the size of our vocabulary from the cell.
How to choose the right hyperparameters for a neural network?
The goal is to get a more practical understanding of decisions one has to make building a neural network like this, especially on how to chose some of the hyperparameters. The full article with code and outputs can be found on Github as a Notebook.
