How does a missile lock on a target?
Using the inertial system to continuously track its own position, the missile will follow a flightpath which will bring it within radar range of the target. The weapon will then switch on its own radar, locate the target, lock on, home in and destroy it. The third option one may choose is the use of semi-active radar midcourse guidance.
How does the radar work on a missile?
Usually the radar is slewed to a target and locked up. When the pilot pickles, the missiles is either receiving data from the aircraft via datalink or is in active mode with the missile’s radar tracking the target. Eventually the missile’s radar will take over and track the target.

For the guidance system to lock on an enemy plane, some remote radar system had to “illuminate” the target by bouncing radar beams off of it. In most cases, this meant the pilot had to keep the aircraft in a vulnerable position after firing in order to keep a radar lock on the enemy until the missile could find it.

Can a missile be fired with no radar lock?
It is possible to fire an active radar missile with no radar lock (so-called “maddog”); in this case, the missile will fly until it’s nearly out of fuel, and then it will turn on its radar and pursue the first target it sees. This is not a recommended strategy if there are friendly aircraft in close proximity to the enemy.
Is it necessary to have a radar lock on a target?
An important thing to note is that a radar lock is not always required to launch weapons at a target. For guns kills, if the aircraft has a radar lock on a target, it can accurately gauge range to the target, and provide the pilot with the appropriate corrections for lead and gravity drop, to get an accurate guns kill.
