How does a two wire proximity sensor work?
2 wire DC: These sensors contain an output amplifier with the function N.O. or N.C. that can pilot a load connected in series. In this system a residual current flows through the load even when in the open state and a voltage drop occurs to the sensor when it is in the closed state.
How are sensors connected in series?
To connect two sensors in series, the +SIGNAL wire of sensor 1 is connected to +24 Volts, the -SIGNAL wire of sensor 1 is connected to the +SIGNAL wire of sensor 2, and the -SIGNAL wire of sensor 2 is connected to the die protection input.
How are two wire inductive proximity sensors connected?
Connecting the 2-wire sensor can be done by merely connecting the blue wire to the input and the brown wire to the 24V source. The process is the same for replacing a NPN 3-wire sensor. In this case you would just connect the brown wire to the input and the blue wire to the ground of your power supply.

Why are series / parallel connections of proximity switches important?
The series or parallel connection of proximity switches enables the creation of “hard-wired logic circuits”. The latter are particularly useful in applications where logic controllers are not available and yet some simple logic requirements have to be met.
How is a PNP sensor connected to a ground terminal?
Sinking input cards have a load internally connected between its inputs and a DC ground terminal. To complete the circuit, the PNP sensor switches to (+). Sourcing input cards have a load internally connected between its inputs and a +VDC terminal. To complete the circuit, the NPN sensor switches to (-).
