How does a Z80 work?
The Z80 uses a 16-bit program counter (PC) to hold the memory address of the next instruction to execute. This register gradually steps through memory as instructions are executed, but some instructions can alter it directly to cause the flow of the program to branch to a new location.
Is Z80 still used?
The Z80 processor was designed in 1976 to compete with Intel’s classic 8080 chip, the predecessor to the chips that most people have in their computers today. Z80s are still used even today, where a high-power processor isn’t needed.
How many instructions does a Z80 have?
This scheme gives the Z80 a large number of permutations of instructions and registers; Zilog categorizes these into 158 different “instruction types”, 78 of which are the same as those of the Intel 8080 (allowing operation of all 8080 programs on a Z80).
What is a Z80 microcomputer?
The Z80 is an eight-bit microprocessor introduced in 1976 by Zilog, Inc. Since its release, it has been used in many desktop, embedded, and military computer systems. The first Z80 chips ran at 2.5 MHz, gradually increasing in speed up to 20 MHz.
Who bought Zilog?
Littelfuse Inc
In August 2017, Zilog and its parent IXYS Corporation were acquired by Littelfuse Inc in exchange for $750 million in cash and stocks.
What does s mean in the Z80 instruction set?
S = sign, bit 7 of the result byte (accumulator or high byte for 16-bit operations) Z = zero, set if the result is zero (8 or 16-bit value) X = undocumented, bit 5 of the result byte H = half-carry, the carry (theoretical bit 4) of the low nibble of the result byte

What’s the difference between Z80 and 8086 syntax?
The Z80 syntax uses parentheses around an expression to indicate that the value should be used as a memory address (as mentioned below), while the 8086 syntax uses brackets instead of ordinary parentheses for this purpose. Both Z80 and 8086 use the + sign to indicate that a constant is added to a base register to form an address
Who was the inventor of the Z80 microprocessor?
Zilog Z80. The Z80 is an 8-bit microprocessor introduced by Zilog as the startup company’s first product. The Z80 was conceived by Federico Faggin in late 1974 and developed by him and his 11 employees starting in early 1975.
