How does bank angle affect the radius of turn?
The radius of turn at any given bank angle is directly proportional to the square of the airspeed. Conversely, if the aircraft speed remains constant, increasing the bank angle will decrease the turn radius.
At what angle is the airplane banked?
Bank — The angle between the wings and the horizon, as viewed from the rear of the airplane. An airplane with its wings level has zero degrees of bank.
How do you calculate turning radius?
Turning Radius Calculator
- TR = WB/tan(a) TR = WB/tan(a)
- Wheel Base.
- Turn Angle (degrees)

How many G’s is a 60 degree bank?
2 Gs
Load factor and accelerated stalls: A constant-altitude turn with 45 degrees of bank imposes 1.4 Gs, and a turn with 60 degrees of bank imposes 2 Gs. Stall speed increases with the square root of the load factor, so an airplane that stalls at 50 knots in unaccelerated, level flight will stall at 70 knots at 2 Gs.
Is the turn radius equal to the bank angle?
The rule taught at AFIIC was slightly different: your turn radius is equal to the (nm/min) 2 / 10. I thought that was inaccurate and used (nm/min) / 3. But then I realized much of this was based on a standard rate turn but we can’t do that at higher speeds because we want to keep our bank angle under 25° as instrument pilots.
Is the bank angle of an aircraft a variable?
The aircraft flying at a larger turn radius must use a larger bank angle than the aircraft flying at a smaller turn radius. Note that mass or weight does not appear as a variable in the final equations.
How does the radius of a turn change?
For non-standard rate turns, the radius and diameter vary based on the given bank angle, rate of turn, and airspeed. As airspeed increases, turn radius increases. As bank angle and rate of turn increase, turn radius decreases.
Why do you need a higher bank angle?
The rub is that higher AOA or greater speed is needed at a higher bank angle to generate adequate vertical lift. Decreasing turn radius by increasing bank angle and AOA will allow one to “catch up” with the other.
