How does Nix package manager work?
A Nix expression describes everything that goes into a package build action (a “derivation”): other packages, sources, the build script, environment variables for the build script, etc. Nix tries very hard to ensure that Nix expressions are deterministic: building a Nix expression twice should yield the same result.
Is NixOS good?
In general, NixOS really is as good as it seems on the surface. With more people using it, there will be more packages and more money for building tooling.
Does Nix work on Mac?
You can use Nix on MacOS X and with nix you don’t need brew. I used it for few years that way. If you use nix-darwin + home-manager you can also configure your mac the way you would NixOS.
What package manager does MacOS use?
Homebrew
Homebrew is a free and open-source software package management system that simplifies the installation of software on Apple’s operating system, macOS, as well as Linux.
Is Nix package manager safe?
Nix has full support for Linux and macOS and can safely be installed side-by-side with an existing package manager.
Why should I use NixOS?
NixOS is a GNU/Linux distribution that uses Nix as both a package manager and a configuration manager. Another benefit of NixOS is that it’s really easy to spin up a new server since the only thing you need for that is the original Nix expressions you’ve used to build your old server.
Is NixOS worth learning?
Conclusion. NixOS is definitely a difficult operating system to get into, but it was well worth the effort for me. Through using NixOS, and reading the build specifications for packages in NixOS, I learnt a lot about the Linux itself. Now I have an operational system that I can replicate and rely on, which can last.
Is NixOS good for servers?
I’m using a NixOS server in prod for an application. Works very nicely, makes deployment a breeze. NixOS works best when you’re ‘all-in’ with Nix, including using nixkpkgs over language package managers (or having such package managers be nix-aware).
How do I uninstall nix from my Mac?
To uninstall nix you will need to do the following things:
- remove the . “$ HOME/.nix-profile/etc/profile.d/nix.sh” line in your ~/.profile or ~/.bash_profile.
- rm -rf $HOME/{.nix-channels,.nix-defexpr,.nix-profile,.config/nixpkgs}
- sudo rm -rf /nix. On a multi-user install, also remove all the nixbld[0-9] users.
Is nix like Docker?
Nix itself doesn’t use Docker, and you can deploy it like that just fine (with NixOS, and NixOps if you have multiple machines). However if you are using nix for deterministic builds you might as well add the few lines of code to have nix build the docker image to vs a Docker file with a single copy command.
Is brew better than apt?
The purpose of both tools is similar. The difference is that APT1 is native, required and fully integrated part of Ubuntu while Homebrew is a 3rd party addition. And the most important difference from a user’s perspective is that they use different command syntax, although the tasks are quite similar.
What do package managers do?
Package managers are charged with the task of finding, installing, maintaining or uninstalling software packages upon the user’s command. Typical functions of a package management system include: Managing dependencies to ensure a package is installed with all packages it requires, thus avoiding “dependency hell”
