How does PCA choose variables?
In each PC (1st to 5th) choose the variable with the highest score (irrespective of its positive or negative sign) as the most important variable. Since PCs are orthogonal in the PCA, selected variables will be completely independent (non-correlated).
How do you use PCA for categorical variables?
While it is technically possible to use PCA on discrete variables, or categorical variables that have been one hot encoded variables, you should not. Simply put, if your variables don’t belong on a coordinate plane, then do not apply PCA to them.
What is the difference between the first and second principal component?
The first principal component is the direction in space along which projections have the largest variance. The second principal component is the direction which maximizes variance among all directions orthogonal to the first.
Can you use indicator variables in PCA?
PCA is designed for continuous variables. It tries to minimize variance (=squared deviations). The concept of squared deviations breaks down when you have binary variables. So yes, you can use PCA.
Which is the first principal component of PCA?
In PCA, given a mean centered dataset X with n sample and p variables, the first principal component P C 1 is given by the linear combination of the original variables X 1, X 2, …, X p
How do I determine which variables contribute to the 1st?
The conclusion is that for each PCA component, the sign of its scores and of its loadings is arbitrary and meaningless. It can be flipped, but only if the sign of both scores and loadings is reversed at the same time. Furthermore, the directions that the principal components act correspond to the eigenvectors of the system.
Which is better for principal component analysis PCA or PLS?
Note: Partial least square (PLS) is a supervised alternative to PCA. PLS assigns higher weight to variables which are strongly related to response variable to determine principal components. Why is normalization of variables necessary in PCA ?
What are the coefficients of a PCA loading?
PCA loadings are the coefficients of the linear combination of the original variables from which the principal components (PCs) are constructed.
