What does application server mean in SharePoint Server 2016?
The use of the term “Application server” in SharePoint Server 2016 has a different meaning from the common use of the term in previous versions. In previous versions of SharePoint, the Application server typically hosted service application endpoints that Front-end servers would call while serving user requests.
