How does yubico key work?
The YubiKey is a device that makes two-factor authentication as simple as possible. Instead of a code being texted to you, or generated by an app on your phone, you press a button on your YubiKey. That’s it. Each device has a unique code built on to it, which is used to generate codes that help confirm your identity.
What is yubico PIV?
The YubiKey supports the Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card interface specified in NIST SP 800-73 document “Cryptographic Algorithms and Key Sizes for PIV”. PIV enables you to perform RSA or ECC sign/decrypt operations using a private key stored on the smartcard, through common interfaces like PKCS#11.

What is PIV? A PIV credential is a US Federal governmentwide credential used to access Federally controlled facilities and information systems at the appropriate security level. PIV credentials have certificates and key pairs, pin numbers, biometrics like fingerprints and pictures, and other unique identifiers.
What happens if I lose YubiKey?
A YubiKey will simply provide another, more convenient method of authentication. If you lose your YubiKey or forget it at home, you can use the secure code generator on your phone to complete your 2FA logins. You can use them in either place, along with your password, to authenticate web logins.
Do I need 2 YubiKeys?
Best practice is to have multiple YubiKeys set up for your accounts. One on your keychain, or one in your wallet, or one in a safe place at home will help to make sure you’ve always got a backup YubiKey nearby. Many services let users set up multiple YubiKeys with their account for this very reason.
Is YubiKey a smartcard?

What happens if someone steals your YubiKey?
That means if you misplace a U2F key (or it gets stolen) it doesn’t matter where it ends up—no one will be able to pull private information from the key to connect it your account, because that information is nowhere to be found. There is nothing to tie that key to you.
Can I use my PIV card at the airport?
In 18 months, all U.S. airport checkpoints will require every traveler to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, or another acceptable form of identification. Other acceptable forms of ID include U.S. military ID, a federal government PIV card, or a valid passport.
Who needs a PIV card?
Who gets a PIV Card? All BIE federal employees (Title 5 & Title 25) are required to have an active PIV Card. In addition, contractors may occasionally require a PIV Card on a case-by-case basis. If you have a contractor who may require a card, contact your servicing Personnel Security Specialist.
How long will a YubiKey last?
The internals of the YubiKey’s security algorithms currently limits each key to 30+ years of usage. The Yubikey is powered by the USB port and therefore requires no battery and there is no display on it that can break. The key itself will survive years of daily use.
