How is mortality forecast?
Mortality forecasting refers to the art and science of determining likely future mortality rates. It is especially important in rich countries with a high proportion of aged people, since aged populations are expensive in terms of pensions (both public and private). It is a major topic in Ageing studies.

A simple example is the age-period model for an age-period array of mortality rates. Mortality models are built as a combination of age, period, and cohort-effects, but the likelihood only varies with a surjective function of these time effects. The time effects can be divided into two parts.
