How is motor vibration measured?
Vibration is most commonly measured using a ceramic piezoelectric sensor or accelerometer. An accelerometer is a sensor that measures the dynamic acceleration of a physical device as a voltage.
How do you test vibrations?
The simplest vibration testing procedure, sine vibration testing uses a single sinusoidal tone following simple harmonic motion input to the test specimen. This sinusoidal tone can be swept across the test frequency range, or it can be fixed on a single frequency, depending on the requirement.
What is frequency and vibration?
Frequency, which is measured in hertz (Hz) units, is the rate at which vibrations and oscillations occur. Frequencies are used to determine and differentiate vibrational patterns. So, an atom that is vibrating at a faster rate would be considered a higher frequency than one that is vibrating at a much slower rate.
What do you need to know about vibration on a motor?
Typical applications demand vibration measurements in the horizontal, vertical and axial direction on both the inboard and outboard motor bearings. Aside from typical mechanical issues, such as misaligned couplings and unbalance, the vibration analyst can also detect electrical issues that cause mechanical vibrations.
Where to place the vibration sensor in an electric induction motor?
Figure 2: Main components of an electric induction motor with squirrel cage rotor. As we have already discussed in a general way in our article, “Where to place the vibration sensor”, in an electrical motor, the measurement points for vibrations must correspond to the centerline of the shaft, on the bearing housing.
Do you have to Mount accelerometer with vibration motor?
You must mount the vibration motor and the accelerometer together. The more secure the mounting the better your results, read about how vibrations are transferred here. If possible, mount the two to a mass with a known overall weight – the target mass has a direct influence on the resulting (measured) vibration amplitude.
Is there a way to measure the vibration of a machine?
When pressed against a piece of machinery (does make you question how accurate it is in this “mounting” configuration) it reads out the RMS vibration level and also uses some algorithm to rate the overall vibration of your bearing or machine.
