How is the salt value of a password generated?
The password is not stored. The salt value is generated at random and can be any length, in this case the salt value is 8 bytes long. The salt value is appended to the plaintext password and then the result is hashed, this is referred to as the hashed value. Both the salt value and hashed value are stored.
What is the purpose of a random salt?
The salt is meant to prevent attack cost sharing, i.e. an attacker trying to attack two hashed passwords for less than the twice the cost of attacking one. One solution to ensure uniqueness is to generate a random salt in a wide enough space.
How is the salt used in the shadow password system?
The shadow password system is used to limit access to hashes and salt. The salt is eight characters, the hash is 86 characters, and the password length is unlimited. It is common for a web application to store in a database the hash value of a user’s password. Without a salt, a successful SQL injection attack may yield easily crackable passwords.
Why do user names spread hashes around less than a random salt?
Because user names have lower entropy than a random salt, so they spread your hashes around less than a proper salt does. Not that the example on that page is very spectacular anyway.
How are salt used to store passwords in a hash table?
Recap 1 A cryptographic salt is made up of random bits added to each password instance before its hashing. 2 Salts create unique passwords even in the instance of two users choosing the same passwords. 3 Salts help us mitigate hash table attacks by forcing attackers to re-compute them using the salts for each user. Do you need to encrypt salt to store passwords?
The salt doesn’t need to be encrypted, for example. Salts are in place to prevent someone from cracking passwords at large and can be stored in cleartext in the database. However, do not make the salts readily accessible to the public.
