How many types of files are there in Linux?
Linux supports seven different types of files. These file types are the Regular file, Directory file, Link file, Character special file, Block special file, Socket file, and Named pipe file.

The “total” is the disk usage of listed files (because of -a including the . and .. entries) in blocks (1024 bytes or if POSIXLY_CORRECT is set in 512 bytes), not including the content of subdirectories.
