How much power do you run on FT8?
I usually run about 10-20 watts. I’ve bumped it up to as much as 50 but I really don’t see that much difference in signal reports say between 30-50 so to keep the radio happy I run much less. I actually have the most fun just running 5 watts.
Is FT8 a low power mode?
4.7 Although FT8 is a weak signal mode, not a QRP mode per se, please keep your transmit power down. Turn down the wick to QRP levels.

What is QRA64?
Introduction. WSJT-X is a computer program designed to facilitate basic amateur radio communication using very weak signals. QRA64 has a number of advantages over JT65, including better performance on the very weakest signals. We imagine that over time it may replace JT65 for EME use.
How much power does a FT8 use?
FT-8 is 100% key down for 15 seconds every 15 seconds and JT-9 it’s a full minute. If you set the power at 100 watts the FT-8 output is 100 watts average, and also peak, for 15 seconds straight. For SSB phone or CW for most of us, it is about 40 watts average with occasional 100-watt peaks.
What do I need to run FT8?
To use FT8 you need four things:
- An HF transceiver with data or SSB capability.
- An audio interface, a way to get receive audio from the radio into a computer and audio output of the computer into the radio, typically a sound card interface.
- A computer capable of running the FT8 software and time synchronization.

How do I set up my FT8?

- Enter your call sign.
- Enter your Maidenhead grid.
- This is optional, but if you choose your IARU region, it’ll help set up your frequency list later.
- I like the program off by default as a reminder to set my system time.
How do I send CQ FT8?
7.2 When you are all ready to CQ, simply click the Enable Tx button to start calling CQ. That’s all there is to it! If everything goes to plan, within 15 seconds or so the rig will go into transmit and you’ll see the CQ message at the bottom left of the main WSJT-X window being transmitted.
