Common box joint spacing dimensions are ¼, 3/8 and ½-inch. I like the 3/8-inch size, but any of them may work well for your application. Box joints look and work best when the width of the joint is divisible by the width of the individual joint fingers.
How do you measure a box joint?
Sizes and proportions Generally, this joint looks best (and is strongest) when the thickness of the fingers is equal to half the thickness of the material. For example, if the stock used is 3/4 in. thick, the fingers should be 3/8 in. thick.

Can a jig be used to make Box joints?
No, to make box joints a fixture jig is used. Hopefully the graphics here will explain all but if not this is how I make mine. First I take a piece of wood and screw it to my miter gauge for my table saw. Make sure the wood is flat flush with the table. Now determine the width of finger joints desired, set a dado blade accordingly.
How big should a table saw box joint be?
A slight amount of finger protrusion is acceptable and easily leveled with a sharp hand plane or a block of wood wrapped with sandpaper. With table saw box joints, if your fingers protrude more than 1/64″, lower your saw blade. Conversely, if your fingers are too short, raise the blade.
