Is BSD license Open source?
BSD licenses are a low restriction type of license for open source software that does not put requirements on redistribution. As a low restriction and requirement license type, Berkeley Source Distribution (BSD) licenses are used for the distribution of many freeware, shareware and open source software.
Does BSD require attribution?
🔗 License Notes Clause 4 adds an “attribution” requirement, not to be confused with the “advertising” clause found in older BSD license texts. This license was noticed in cyrus-sasl and UpTools. It is Free, but GPL compatibility is unclear at this time.
Can one take BSD licensed code and distribute it?
Yes you can. The Free Software Foundation website lists licenses that are compatible with their GPL 3.0 license. Included in the compatible licenses are the 3-Clause BSD (but not the original BSD), as well as Apache 2.0, Artistic License 2.0, and Creative Commons Zero (CC0).
Do you need a license for your source code?
The license of your source code must be compatible with the license of the open source code you are linking to. For instance, if your code is proprietary, you won’t be allowed to use a library under the GPL license. This is where people tends to make more mistakes.
Can a modification be released under an open source license?
Modifications to the software can be release under any license. Changes made to the source code may not be documented. It offers no explicit position on patent usage. The license and copyright notice must be included in the documentation of the compiled version of the source code (as opposed to only in the source code).
